Built around 1300 by Rainier Grimaldi, lord of Cagnes, the castle was, first of all, a fort protecting the town from outside attacks. In 1620 Jean-Henri Grimaldi transformed the castle into a more comfortable and decorated rich palace.
Purchased by the township, the castle became town museum in 1946 (classified historical monument in 1948).
Nowadays, the Grimaldi Castle Museum hosts the Olive Tree Museum, the collection of Suzy Solidor portraits and temporary modern art exhibitions, as well as classical music concerts.
